The Challenge: The client's backyard at her residence near Knightdale was a blank canvas and wanted to create three functional and separate outdoor rooms.

The Wishlist: The client's wishlist included 3 main scope items that she wanted to be included in the plan: a heated swimming pool, a wood-burning fire pit, and a patio space to serve as a dining area and a lounging/gathering area. She requested that all the spaces be connected but still physically defined as separate “Outdoor Rooms”. This client hired me because she felt she needed a professional landscape designer to help organize her conceptual modern design vision into a functional backyard oasis, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing
The Solution:
-
I created a design that used strong geometric shapes to define each of the 3 areas on her wish list.
-
All of the hardscape materials in my design reflected the materials used for her house’s modern farmhouse architecture from the paver colors and style choices, pool deck & and coping, retaining walls and fire pit construction, and custom-designed wooden pergola that spanned the dining area and lounging areas. I used decorative bistro-style string lights to illuminate the spaces under the pergola and add ambiance.
-
To give a modern feel to all walkways in the backyard I chose to set large, precut stone steppers set in either turf or decorative mulch, depending on their location and function.
-
A colorful plant pallet mixing flowering trees, ornamental & and evergreen shrubs, grasses, and perennials added many seasons of vibrant color which the client found very appealing and exciting.
