The Challenge: This client wanted to convert their neglected, nearly bare backyard in the country into a “fun, exciting, welcoming, usable space” where the family could gather and entertain friends and neighbors. They hired me after a lengthy design consultation to help them realize their dream.

The Wishlist: included a swimming pool, hot tub or spa, dedicated firepit space, outdoor kitchen, lounging or sitting area next to the pool, and turf areas for the kids to run and play.
The Solution: My design included all the clients desired scope items.
-
One major site opportunity that helped form the design concept was that the backyard sloped sharply from right to left. This allowed me to create a series of water features that mimicked this elevation drop starting with the raised spa with a spillover that created a waterfall effect down to the swimming pool.
-
Another spillover allowed me to create another waterfall down to a small pool attached to the lowered firepit/seating patio area.
-
I included a multi-use “open patio” area between the pool and house where the client could add lounge chairs, and a dining table and enjoy space to cook at his new outdoor kitchen enclosure with an overhead pergola.
-
The design included a small but colorful plant pallet to provide multiple seasons of color and interest and visually soften the hardscape elements.
